Beczka - Introduction

Mercedes Benz 240 TD

240 TD means ‘model W123 with estate (kombi) body and diesel engine’.
From May 1978 to January 1986 Mercedes produced 38,903 pieces of this model.
Its 2,4-liter engine has 4 cylinders, 72 HP and offers max speed of 143 km/h

Last may I decided to drive one of them from Poland to Africa.
Gambia was a country of my choice…

In August I bought the proper car, it was in great condition as for 850 EUR I paid for it…
Not to mention it was 23 years old with 440000km on the clock :)

In Poland this car is called Beczka, so let me call it this way here

By that time my crew was also completed, two brothers…

Bartek S.

i Kuba S.

We decided to leave Poland on December 25th.
And we did so, although it was really difficult to leave behind the tables full of X-mass delicacies…

We wanted to get to Spain as soon as possible – no stops longer then 30minutes, no pictures or any other time wasters…

It took us 52 hours to drive 3000km from Katowice to Granada :)

We were surprised that the only place in Europe with snow was the close neighbourhood of Barcelona..

Being in Granada you have to visit Alhambra.
In past the last Arab place in Spain, for us a first contact with Arab culture…

that is a little bit different story, so the pictures are available here

BECZKA'S CREW IN ALHAMBRA

After quick look at Sierra Nevada…

We went to Algeciras, a port town next to Gibraltar. Only 250km driving!

For the first time we met some Lisbon-Dakar guys…

In our excitement about leaving Europe, we took a hotel just in front of Algeciras port

In the morning we met some other guys driving their ‘cars’ to Gambia..

After saying Good-Bye to Europe…

We started some planning :)
Finally…

First impression in Morocco – every taxi is Beczka!!

And for the whole time in Africa everybody will think we’re really a taxi, trying to catch us for a ride! :)

29 December. Ceuta – Rabat – Casablanca. 416km

although it wasn't planned, we have spent some time in Casablanca...

sometimes we've been discovering a small japanese tourist inside ourselves :)

30 December. Casablanca – Marrakech. 245km

let's go to Marrakech!

Unusually, we had a lot of time to enjoy Marakech, for me the most impressive city in Morocco

To experience local culture I had to try local speciality – steamed head of sheep…

31 December. Marrakech – Tiznit. 373km

Looking for more excitement we decided to go through Atlas Mountains.
Tisi-n-test Pass lies at 2092 meters above see level and our guide said it might be dangerous because of the snow there…

After passing Atlas Mountains we finally felt like in Africa…

We welcomed New Year in a small city, Tiznit.
Very small city.
Such small city that it was actually impossible to buy even a beer :(
